About Back Order Requirements

In order to create a back order for a product, that product must allow back-ordering. This is determined by the setting of the Allow Backorders option on the Products record's Inventory > General tab, as shown in the figure below.



If a product is out of stock and does not allow back-ordering, then an order that contains that product cannot be marked as shipped until new stock arrives (or returns are processed).
